FARINGDON ECOWEEK – LIVING MORE SUSTAINABLY - JUNE 16-23rd 2012

Be happier, healthier and BETTER OFF! Saturday 16th June marks the beginning of a whole week of more than 70 low carbon ECOEVENTS taking place in the Urban-Rural partnership area around Faringdon.

ECOWEEK kicks off on the opening Saturday with ECOSWAP (free SwapShop) in the Corn Exchange, ECOGROW (open allotments) in the afternoon, and ECOQUEST (Countryside Question Time & Slow Food Supper) in the evening.

How DOES your green bin get sorted? ECOTRASH is a high tech tour around state-of-the-art recycling facilities. ECOVINE & ECOBEER are a celebration of local vineyards and microbreweries; and ECOBARD involves hedgerow cooking and storytelling around the campfire. ECOMILL and ECOSCREW take you on a cycle ride to see how water power does the job.

And ECOTRAIL allows you to be nosey neighbours, taking you around dozens of houses that have interesting eco-credentials. For the budding beekeepers and ornithologists there is a not-to-be-missed ECOBIRDS and ECOBEES at Carswell Farm down by the Thames. An RSPB survey on an adjacent farm showed more bird species (71) than on any other farm in the UK.

To round off the week on Saturday 23rd, the ECOBIKES and ECOWALKS will set off around the ECOFARMS (there are sixteen organic farms within just two miles of Faringdon…) ending up at ECOSUN and ECOWIND: the Westmill Wind & Solar Farm Open Day (11am to 4pm), where you can also see the largest Solar Farm in the UK. Here there will be OODLES activities for all ages, including ECOCHEF with Andrew Kojima (2012 Masterchef Finalist). Free Entry and Free Car Parking on site – although sustainable methods of transport particularly welcome! And bring your BIKES for the CYCLYMPICS and the World Record Attempt at “hugging” a Solar farm with circles and cycles!
